Sketchbook Pro 6 doodle

Bought the latest version of Sketchbook Pro and was playing around a bit. I've always liked the feel of Sketchbook, but the interface never really felt right. I think this latest version is much better and well worth the $30. Now, I just need to learn how to draw...

Random drawings

Just a couple of random drawings. I want to try to get back to more pencil drawing and traditional mediums again. Gonna try and pull some actual paints out to see if I remember how to use them...

MFA: Round 1...Fight!

2 weeks ago, I began my pursuit of an MFA in Illustration at the University of Hartford in their Low Residency MFA program. I spent 2 intense weeks studying and learning from amazing faculty Bunny Carter, Dennis Nolan, Ted and Betsy Lewin, Jim Carson, and Murray Tinkelman. I had a blast and learned a lot.

I also met some awesome classmates! They are all extremely talented and come from a variety of backgrounds. I know I'm going to learn a lot from them over the next few years!

We spent the first week working on our "Dream Assignment". It was pretty much anything we wanted to do in terms of subject, but had to produce 5 black and white and 1 color sketch by the end of the week. Sounds pretty easy, but we also had to nail down our story moments, produce at least 50 thumbnails for each, and tighten up the sketches.

For my assignment, I chose to do mock comic book covers for a potential series. I had a rough story in mind, but no script or breakdown written out. I decided to try to capture different "moments" that might happen in the story. It's a story I'm thinking of developing as part of my thesis project.

The second week, our assignment was to produce a children's book dummy. I came up with an original story and sketched out all of the pages in black and white. I like the story idea and may also pursue it as part of my thesis. But for now, here are a color cover and 1 color layout comp.

Scott Trakker and T-Bob

This is Scott Trakker from the 80's cartoon, M.A.S.K. Definitely not the coolest character on the show and T-Bob was probably the worst vehicle ever. But honestly, who wouldn't want a robot buddy who could turn into a scooter...

Photoshop clean:
Original Scan:
I recently purchased the John Romita and Walter Simonson Artist Editions from IDW. Looking through those books inspired me to bust out the Blue Col-Erase and graphite. And since I'm still on a GI Joe kick, I decided to sketch out a Cobra B.A.T. (Battle Android Trooper for you loser's who don't know). While the results reek of rust and bad drawing habits (lack of reference, half-ass'd backgrounds, boring pose/angle, no story), I had a lot of fun drawing it. Maybe I should find the time to do more comic book stuff in the future...

Yo Joe

Call me crazy, but I'm actually looking forward to the newest GI Joe: Retaliation movie. After the unwatchable "Rise of Cobra" that came out a few years ago, anything is as "step up"....get it..."step up"?...Jon Chu, the director if Retaliation directed those Step Up dance movies.....hello? Is this thing on?

Avengers Assemble!

I must admit, I was originally pretty skeptical about The Avengers movie. I feel most of the Marvel films, while pretty fun, never quite hit the mark. But reviews have been coming out the past few days and they're pretty damn good across the board. I guess I'll find out how good it is when it opens...

All the lightning and thunderstorms in the bay area the other day made me think Thor was summoning a storm to battle some baddie in the skies above. I did this quickie while procrastinating on another project that I'm supposed to be working on.

Zentraedi Battle Pods

I always thought the Zentraedi Battlepods from Robotech were the weirdest, coolest, most awkward and awesome design ever. (And yes, I know it's originally the Japanese Macross series, but I grew up watching Robotech so bite me. Haha.)

Anybody who knows me knows that I started drawing after reading Spiderman comics as a kid. He was and still is my favorite comic book character. I always loved the fact that Spiderman and Peter Parker always had real world problems. He was a socially awkward, had trouble making rent, and was never appreciated for the good he did. Despite all this, he always fought the good fight and did the right thing...a genuine "good guy".

Ralph McQuarrie tribute sketch

A sketch I did as a tribute to Ralph McQuarrie for the display window at ILM. At first I had a really hard time deciding what to do. Eventually, I ended up pulling up images of my favorite Ralph paintings on my computer as inspiration. I started sketching in my sketchbook with the hopes of clearing my head and coming up with a good idea. But I had so much fun sketching, I just kept going and going and ended up with this...
